VISIT TO THE MALASPINA CASTLE OF VARZI
On the trail of the Malaspina-Odetti family, a journey through the public rooms – including the Salone Faustino Odetti, the adjacent Sala Donna Caterina, the ancient mangers below, the Ice House and the Galleria dei Sassi Medievali – and the private wing, with various rooms that preserve period furnishings and an archive of ancient and precious documents.
The Castle is an architectural complex linked to the Malaspina family: in 1164 it obtained as a fief from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa the territories ranging from the hills of Rivanazzano to Oramala. In 1838 the life of the Malaspina family intertwined with that of the Odetti family when the last heir of the ancient lineage married Count Carlo Odetti di Marcorengo.
The architecture of the Castle shows three souls in three nuclei: the oldest dating back to the 13th century, a second building attributable to the 15th century and a third from the 1700s. The tower dating back to the 12th century, built to connect the village of Varzi with the Oramala Castle, was used as a prison for a long time. In 1460, during the period of the Inquisition, 25 women accused of witchcraft were imprisoned and then killed here: for this reason it is also called the “Witches’ Tower”. It is now owned and managed by the municipality while remaining connected to the history of the Castle.
